Light Calligraphy (Entry 1)

Maybe you’ve seen the Sprint TV commercials of 2008 that show customers walking through a park at dusk, their cell phones aglow and sweeping streams of colorful light create beautiful abstract imagery all around them. The artwork is the result of long-exposure photography where the aperture of the camera is left open long enough for the movement of a cell phone to create long strokes of light as the cell phone moves.

This artist, Julien Breton, has taken the technique and combined it with the another artform: calligraphy. What is immediately apparent is the craftsmanship and meticulous nature in which the photo was created. The photos are so perfect – it’s only natural to suspect the involvement of Photoshop. Perfectly sweeping lines cast strokes of beautiful color and light, making the environment glow. All the while, the artist cannot be seen. No ghost. No wisp of a silhouette to signify human involvement.
All that remains is a perfect three-dimensional caligraphic symbol as witnessed only by the unwavering eye of the camera.
