Creativity In Photography (3 Part Series)

Tilt Shift Photography (Entry 2)

The first time I saw tilt shift photographs I said to myself “those are some of the most intricate dioramas I’ve seen!” thinking that what I was looking at were miniature objects arranged for a photo (like a train set). What I failed to realize was that I was seeing real life photography of actual scenes and not miniatures.
The photographer uses a special lens that tilts and shifts away from the image plane and effectively takes in a huge scene without the normal vertical plane convergence one would normally see from conventional lenses.

To further the effect, some of these photographers will blur the outer edge of their photos to mimic macro (closeup) photography. With the addition of this post-process step, it becomes hard for the brain to believe what your eyes are seeing.

By stringing a sequence of pics together, some photographers have been able to make some ‘stop-motion’ videos that are truly bizarre.
